Match Report
Kelso’s form on the road continues to cause great concern. The euphoria of the outstanding win over Selkirk was quickly forgotten at Biggar. There were two late changes in the team when Ali Marsh dropped out with a calf injury and Ewan Ford, who had shown excellent form in the game the week before in his new position on the flank, dropped out with flu.
For once conditions at Biggar were dry but the players had a gale force wind with which to contend. A strong Kelso support, no doubt buoyed by the good win the previous week, were made to suffer through the conditions and the error strewn performance of the team. Biggar scored the first try of the day but Gregg Ponton kicked an early penalty. However,a 12-3 half time deficit, through two tries, one of which was converted, eventually became a 39-3 defeat. There were doubts at half time as to whether Biggar would have a big enough lead but these doubts were quickly allayed as the Biggar side ran in another 5 second half tries, with thankfully no great success with the kicks as only 1 of them was converted. The bonus point was achieved early in the half. Biggar looked as if they had strengthened their team from our last meeting with an outstanding full back and a big forward. Both of these players caused endless damage to Kelso.
Kelso’s cause was not helped by injuries to Stef Carnegie, on the comeback trail after a previous injury, on 20 minutes, James Stevenson after 60 minutes and Kevin Utterson after 70 minutes. Losing two of our back row players was too much of a handicap to surmount and was fairly critical in determining the outcome of the game
With two home games before the league split, there is still light at the end of the tunnel but there is also worry over the inconsistent performances.
