Match Report
The roller coaster which represents the Kelso season continues but, at least on Saturday, it finished on the up slope. With more injuries after the Biggar game with James Stevenson, Dom Buckley and Stef Carnegie out, Kelso were glad to have Ewan Ford back from illness and Ali Marsh from injury. There was further delight with Gareth Riddell making his first appearance of the season after his premature retiral at the end of last season. There was, however, less to cheer about with yellow cards for Kevin Utterson and Ian Wallace during the game
On a windy but dry day, the early exchanges were equal and all we had to show for the first half were 2 penalties from Greg Ponton and a drop goal from Ewan Ford for Kelso and a Ross McCaulay penalty for West to take the score at half time to 9-3 for Kelso.
The game opened up a little in the second half and after another bout of penalties with 2 for Ponton and another for West, the tries came. Kelso scored a try through Stuart Lowrie after some good continuity play amongst the forwards. Ponton converted this try but failed with the next conversion after captain Richard Minto broke from half way. This try took the score to 27-6 and sent Kelso in pursuit of the bonus point. However, it was not to be as West scored 2 tries of their own, one of which was converted.
Ponton kicked another penalty for Kelso to take the final score to 30-18 for another home win.
All in all, a nuggety performance to ease the memories of last week’s debacle at Biggar.
Next week sees another important game against newcomers to the league, Whitecraigs. They are level on points with us just now but the game is at home!
